Refuel Retreat

I got Refueled! I had a great time of retreat last week in Destin Florida with LeaderTreks at their Refuel Retreat. This was my third Refuel Retreat and each time I have attended a Refuel I have learned so much and returned back home and to the church refueled and ready to go.

What did I get out of Refuel?

Rest. I was able to spend some extra time simply resting without having responsibility on me other than learning. I’ll…

Changing how we do what we do

Part 2 of 3 part series.  You can find part 1 HERE In my last blog post I wrote about the changes in our kids lives due to the arrival of the iPhone in 2007. I posed the thought that student ministry isn’t like it used to be and doing student ministry the old way is not going to work with this and future generations. I’m not saying these things to be Negative Ned. I’m saying these things because we…

Youth Group No Longer Fills the Social Need

Part 1 of 3. I remember when I was in jr. high I lived for our youth group’s weekend events. I would go to every possible one. Roller skating? I was in. Camping? I was in. Lock Ins? I was in.
Every Wednesday night I would go to youth group. I did this all the way through my high school years until I graduated. I loved the fun that youth group brought. I loved just hanging out with my friends…

The Relationship Reminder

Yesterday I was reminded about the key to student ministry. The key is relationships.
One of our volunteers leads a small group of middle school girls and she also has two young ladies from the group she is personally in discipling. She has invested time, not just on Sunday evenings at youth but also outside of our youth group time. We had our church picnic yesterday and this volunteer came to me with one of the young girls she is…

The Distractions

I find it so easy to get sidetracked.  I sit down to the computer to do write a message for student church then I find myself ten minutes later reading an article about manatees and the Florida Everglades.  How does this happen? It is so easy to lose focus in life.  We are being bombarded with distractions.

I have found, in my past 25 years of church leadership, that Christians (self included) can get sidetracked and lose focus of what truly…

Success by Numbers

Probably most of us in student ministry are serving in what we would consider a smaller youth group. I read recently an article that stated the average youth group is 60 students and 12 volunteers and 1.25 full time staff. I would venture a guess and say that most youth groups are between 25 to 50 students.

I know we all want our student ministries to grow because that means students are coming to know Christ. Or does it? Some…

For the Hurting Youth Pastor (and a few parents)

I woke up this morning with heartache for a brother.  I don’t know the guy, never met the guy.  All I know is this guy’s passion is to see teenagers lives impacted with the good news of Jesus Christ.  He was the first person on my mind when my eyes opened from a dead sleep.

This brother posted on a youth ministry FB group yesterday this post:
“Would you pray for me.  No students showed up for youth group tonight.” I’m…

Recharge Your Battery

Summer camps up our busyness as student ministers. It’s packed full of special events, camps, and oftentimes multiple mission trips. I just returned back from my most recent mission trip, which took me away from my family for ten days. Add to that a mission trip at the start of the summer and two weeks of camp, and it shouldn’t surprise you that my battery is low. Maybe, like me, you feel wiped out by the summer. But with the need…

Faith in Focus Speakers Bureau

I’m humbled and honored that Alex McFarland invited me to be one of the speakers for Faith in Focus.  I’m not a apologetic genius, I’m not a public figure, I’m not immersed in politics.  What I am is a guy who has been serving in the church for 25 years.  Both in the roles of Student Pastor and also as Ministry Teams Pastor.  In those years God has helped me grow in my knowledge of both student ministry and ministry…

When You Realize You Need a Reset

This morning in my morning quiet time I wrote the following: Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.
Isaiah 41:10 Fear can hold us back from doing what God wants us to do. Sometimes the unknown of what lies ahead can be daunting. If what lies ahead is from God it sure can be daunting…
