Changing how we do what we do

Part 2 of 3 part series.  You can find part 1 HERE In my last blog post I wrote about the changes in our kids lives due to the arrival of the iPhone in 2007. I posed the thought that student ministry isn’t like it used to be and doing student ministry the old way is not going to work with this and future generations. I’m not saying these things to be Negative Ned. I’m saying these things because we…

Faith in Focus Speakers Bureau

I’m humbled and honored that Alex McFarland invited me to be one of the speakers for Faith in Focus.  I’m not a apologetic genius, I’m not a public figure, I’m not immersed in politics.  What I am is a guy who has been serving in the church for 25 years.  Both in the roles of Student Pastor and also as Ministry Teams Pastor.  In those years God has helped me grow in my knowledge of both student ministry and ministry…

When You Realize You Need a Reset

This morning in my morning quiet time I wrote the following: Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.
Isaiah 41:10 Fear can hold us back from doing what God wants us to do. Sometimes the unknown of what lies ahead can be daunting. If what lies ahead is from God it sure can be daunting…

Lead Like Joshua

I have been reading through the book of Joshua in the mornings.  Lots of good leadership examples in the life of Joshua. This is from my journal today:Joshua 24 Joshua gathers the tribes and their leaders and reminds them of what God has done for them. From bringing Abraham out from worshipping other gods to delivering them from Egypt. Joshua reminded them of how God: >established them as his children >cared for them >protected them >provided for themGod has established me…

The Return on Your Investment

In youth ministry it is so easy to get discouraged when you look at a group of students who, for the most part, are spiritually stagnant. What do you do?
1. Go to the Word – are we starting with the Bible as our foundation to youth ministry?2. Pray – Pray that your heart is right where it needs to be. Pray that students get a passion for Christ like they have never had before.3. Evaluate – are we being effective…

Consumerism Starts Young

(I haven’t posted in a long time) This Saturday night we are showing a movie, having a little “movie night” with the students. The movie is a great film about a girl who goes through a terrible tragedy and turns that tragedy into an opportunity to share the love of Jesus Christ and the power of God with others. We took the students to see it when it was released in the theaters. Last night after middle school youth group…

When a Plan Doesn’t Come Together

I hate it when plan doesn’t come together. How about you? This month the plan was to launch a series on moving from shallow faith to deep faith. The whole idea is that I’m responsible for my spiritual growth. We want to give students the tools necessary to grow in their faith, the spiritual habits they need to form in their lives today. Great series. Great plan. I failed! I failed to look at the calendar. Here is what I…

Last Night At Contagious

Wow! The weather was awesome last night. The majority of students were out in the front yard playing Polish and Cornhole. Inside I saw a mean game of skip bo happening (they seemed to be making up their own rules) and also bananagrams. Some simply sat on the sidewalk and chatted during hang time. It’s great to see students and their youth leaders playing games together and engaging in conversation. Last week we went and watched Soul Surfer. NHC youth…

Church Hopping Starts Young

Recently while watching a Simply Youth Ministry podcast, episode 156, the question came up concerning students who attend multiple youth groups and multiple Bible studies at multiple churches. What is the affect of a student who “Just wants more of Jesus and more Bible knowledge”? This podcast got me to doing some thinking. Church hopping seems to be almost a part of the culture in our community among the adults. Let’s go where the latest and greatest thing is happening,…

The Event Envelope

Years ago I threw sign up sheets away. You know the struggle of a student signs up so his 18 buddies sign up then student changes his mind and crosses off his name then the domino effect.I got tired of that. I also got tired of kids looking first before deciding to go. Be a leader and sign your name up! The kids aren’t broke but the system is. So I came up with the envelope system. When we have…
